7 Key Factors to Judge High-Quality Film Faced Plywood

Not all formwork plywood is made equal. Learn how to identify top-quality film faced plywood by checking these 7 critical details before you place a bulk order.

When sourcing formwork plywood internationally, it can be hard to tell good quality from low-grade products just from photos. To help you buy with confidence, here are 7 key factors to inspect.

1. Smooth & Uniform Film Surface

High-quality phenolic film looks glossy, even and free of bubbles, cracks or color differences. Run your hand over the surface — it should feel smooth with no rough spots.

2. Tight Core Veneer Layers

Check the side edge of the panel. Good plywood has neatly stacked veneers with no obvious gaps or voids. Loose cores cause low strength and easy delamination.

3. Waterproof Glue Bonding

Ask for boiling test data. Premium WBP glue maintains full bonding strength after 72 hours of boiling. Poor glue delaminates after just a few hours in water.

4. Precise Thickness Tolerance

Quality factories control thickness tolerance within ±0.5mm. Uniform thickness ensures flat formwork and even concrete surfaces.

5. Fully Sealed Edges

All four sides should be painted with waterproof edge sealer. This stops moisture from entering the core and prevents edge swelling.

6. Consistent Density & Weight

Heavier panels usually mean denser wood core and higher strength. Lightweight plywood often uses low-density wood that wears out faster.

7. Reputable Manufacturer Track Record

Finally, work with factories that specialize in formwork plywood, not general wood products. Experienced manufacturers have stable quality control and understand construction site requirements.
